Meet Coquina: Marineland’s newest dolphin calf
More than 3,000 votes are in: Marineland Dolphin Adventure fans and guests have decided that the park’s newest dolphin calf will be named Coquina.
Marineland held the “What’s in a Name?” sweepstakes on its Facebook page from Aug. 2 to Sept. 5, giving the public the option to choose between Calypso, Coquina, Shimmer and Stella as a name for the dolphin calf born in May.
Now that the calf has a name, Marineland is inviting the public to stop by Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for Family Fun Day to meet her and the other dolphins at the attraction. Trainers there told Action News Jax that Coquina is about three months away from starting her training, but she’s already showing lots of energy and spirit.
Marineland is located in Flagler County, south of St. Augustine. It opened in 1938 as Marine Studios, making it one of Florida’s oldest attractions. It offers several different types of dolphin encounters that range from touching and feeding to being a trainer for a day.
