VFW YOUTH ESSAY CONTEST/SCHOLARSHIPThe Palm Coast Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary announce the annual “Patriots Pen” youth essay competition and the “Voice of Democracy” scholarship competition. Both programs are open to students who are enrolled in a public, private, or parochial school or home study program in Flagler County. These competitions are dedicated to promote patriotism.

The Patriots Pen Youth Essay is open to students in grades 6 – 8. The patriotic theme for the 2014-2015 program is “Why I Appreciate America‘s Veterans”. This essay must be no less than 300 words and cannot exceed 400 words. The first place national award is $5,000.00 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The Voice of Democracy patriotic theme for this year is “Why Veterans are Important to Our Nation’s History and Future”. This competition is open to students in grades 9 – 12. Students compete by writing and recording their submission on CD. The submission must be an original 3 – 5 minute recording. The top national scholarship awarded will be $30,000.00.

Entries start at the local level and should be submitted to VFW Post 8696 along with a completed entry form. November 1, 2014 is the deadline for submission for each entry. Winners then advance to the VFW District (regional) level, and then to the VFW department (state) level. One first place district winner at the department level then advances into the National competition for the national prizes.
