Gamble Rogers’ name to remain on Flagler Beach park

A proposal to rename a state recreation area in Flagler County is going nowhere.

Gamble Rogers’ name will stay at the state recreation area in Flagler Beach.

Earlier this year, city leaders in Flagler Beach approved efforts to get state legislators to rename the area the Flagler Beach State Recreation Area.

Gamble Rogers, a Florida folk singer, died at the site in 1991 as he tried to save a drowning tourist in the ocean.

Legislators named the area in his honor just months later.

Citing growing backlash, Flagler Beach City Commission chairperson Kim Carney announced at last week’s commission meeting those efforts to change the name have been halted.

Tuesday night, the commission, which earlier had lent support to the renaming bid, decided to pull that support
